Your Circle of Friends Matters!
Proverbs 13:20 – “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
The people we choose to surround ourselves with play a significant role in shaping our lives. Whether we realize it or not, our circle of friends has the power to influence our attitudes, our choices, and our spiritual growth. Proverbs 13:20 offers profound wisdom: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” In other words, who we spend time with directly impacts who we become.
Friendship is a gift from God, and when chosen wisely, it can be a source of strength, encouragement, and growth. God designed us for relationship, not just with Him, but with others. In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, we are reminded that “two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” And Proverbs 18:24 says, “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” God’s intention is for our relationships to be life-giving and mutually supportive. True friends are those who encourage us to pursue righteousness, build us up in our faith, help us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and help us see things from a perspective we may have missed.
But not all friendships are beneficial and therefore it is vital for us to know we are loved unconditionally by God and He can provide others that will love us too. Some relationships, while enjoyable, may lead us away from God’s best for us. The Bible warns us about the dangers of surrounding ourselves with people who do not have a heart for God. In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul writes, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.‘” Our circle of friends should challenge us to grow closer to Christ, not pull us away from Him. It’s essential to evaluate whether the friendships we have are helping us become more like Jesus or if they are leading us to compromise our values. Even Jesus, amongst His twelve disciples, chose a small circle of close friends with whom He shared His heart and mission.
The truth is, we often become like those we spend the most time with. This principle can be positive if we are walking with people who seek God wholeheartedly, encouraging each other to live according to His Word. These friendships are not merely for companionship or enjoyment, but for the purpose of sharpening one another, holding each other accountable, and helping each other become more like Christ. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” A Christ-centered friendship should refine us, help us to more loving, patient, and compassionate, whilst we live out the calling God has placed on our lives, because we are continually pointing each other back to God’s truth.
That said, it’s important to have a balance. We are called to love and be a light to everyone, including those who don’t yet know Christ (Matthew 5:14-16). Jesus Himself spent time with sinners, not to conform to their ways but to bring them to repentance and salvation. As believers, we should be in the world but not of the world, influencing others with the love of Christ while guarding our own hearts from negative influences.
As you reflect on your own circle of friends, consider the impact they are having on your life. Are they pushing you toward deeper intimacy with God? Are they encouraging you to grow in godliness, or are they pulling you away from the truth? It’s not about rejecting friends who need Jesus, but about recognizing which relationships are contributing to your spiritual health, editing out those fire extinguishers and those who may be hindering your growth.
If you are finding that your circle of friends does not reflect the values that honour God, seek out relationships that encourage and strengthen your faith. Pray about your circle of friends and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in choosing those you should closely fellowship with. Get involved church activities/ house fellowships, become a worker at church, or speak with our Pastors or Ministers who can mentor you and walk alongside you in your journey with Christ. The right circle of friends can help you grow in ways you never imagined.
