The Power of Speaking Life

Key Verse:
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” — Proverbs 18:21

Words are powerful. They can build someone up or tear them down. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that our tongues carry the power of life and death. The words we speak shape our lives, influence others, and reflect what’s in our hearts. This means we have a responsibility to use our words wisely and speak life into the people and situations around us.

Think about a time when someone spoke encouraging words to you. Maybe they said, “I believe in you,” or “You’re doing a great job.” Those words probably lifted your spirits and gave you confidence to keep going. On the flip side, hurtful words—like “You’ll never amount to anything” or “You always mess things up”—can linger for years, affecting how we see ourselves and the choices we make.

In Genesis, God spoke the world into existence. He said, “Let there be light,” and there was light (Genesis 1:3). His words created life and brought order out of chaos. Similarly, when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He didn’t need to touch him or perform a ritual. He simply said, “Lazarus, come out!”(John 11:43). That’s how powerful words can be.

There was a teacher who made it her mission to speak life into her students, especially those who were struggling. One boy in her class had a reputation for being a troublemaker, and most teachers had written him off. But she saw potential in him and began to tell him things like, “You’re a leader” and “I know you’re capable of great things.” Over time, the boy’s behaviour and attitude changed. He started believing in himself because someone had spoken life into him.

The same principle applies to the words we speak to ourselves. How often do we say things like, “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never succeed,” or “This situation will never change”? These negative words can become self-fulfilling prophecies. But when we align our words with God’s promises, we invite His power into our lives. Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” we can declare, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Speaking life doesn’t mean ignoring reality or pretending everything is fine. It means choosing to focus on God’s truth instead of the negativity around us. For example, if you’re facing a financial struggle, you can say, “I trust that God will provide for all my needs according to His riches in glory” (Philippians 4:19). This kind of faith-filled declaration can shift your perspective and strengthen your trust in God.

It’s also important to remember that speaking life isn’t just about what we say, it’s about how we say it. Colossians 4:6 encourages us to let our words be “full of grace.” This means speaking with kindness, love, and patience, even when we are frustrated or upset.

Here’s a practical challenge: make a habit of speaking life every day. Start by finding one person you can encourage. It could be as simple as saying, “I appreciate you,” or “You’re making a difference.” Then, practice speaking life into your own situation. Replace negative self-talk with God’s promises. Finally, use your words to glorify God, thanking Him for His goodness and declaring His faithfulness.

Confession

I declare that my words carry the power of life, and I choose to speak words that align with God’s truth. I will speak life into my relationships, my circumstances, and my own heart. Through Christ, my words will bring encouragement, hope, and glory to God.

  22. Thank you sir, this is a very good way to start the day. Speaking positivity into your own life, as well as tye life of others.

My wife has a saying ‘every disappointment is a blessing’. She would say this when i would get angry about a situation and speak negativity, but she having a solid foundation and understanding of this principal, would always remind me of the words i choose to use.

Tough situations will always come, but we have a choice how we deal with them. We can make it worse, or we can make it better.

The power of words is evident when Ezekiel gets a vision, God tells him to prophesy to the dry, dead bones. With only his words, Ezekiel brings them to life.
