The Power of Forgiveness

The Power of Forgiveness

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)

Forgiveness is one of the most powerful tools in a Christian’s spiritual arsenal. It’s also one of the most challenging. When someone hurts us deeply, the natural instinct is to hold onto resentment, anger, and unforgiveness. It’s easy to convince ourselves that we have a right to be upset, and that the other person doesn’t deserve our forgiveness. But the Bible tells us a different story. It calls us to forgive, just as God has forgiven us.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that what the other person did is okay. It doesn’t mean that we must forget the hurt or the pain. It simply means that we are releasing our right to hold onto that hurt and trusting God to deal with the situation. When we forgive, we free ourselves from the prison of bitterness, and we make room for God’s peace to fill our hearts.

A woman named Rachel learned this powerful lesson after experiencing betrayal from her closest friend. The pain she felt was overwhelming, and for a long time, she couldn’t imagine ever forgiving her. Every time she thought about the betrayal, she felt a wave of anger and resentment. But the more she held onto these feelings, the more bitter and restless she became. She realised that this unforgiveness was consuming her.

Rachel decided to pray about the situation. One night, as she poured out her heart to God, she felt a gentle prompting from the Holy Spirit to forgive. But God, they don’t deserve it, she thought. But in that moment, God reminded her of the countless times He had forgiven her, despite her mistakes and shortcomings. He reminded her that forgiveness is not about the other person—it’s about releasing ourselves from the chains of bitterness and allowing God’s peace to reign.

In obedience, Rachel chose to forgive her friend—not because the friend deserved it, but because she wanted to be free. It didn’t happen overnight, but gradually, she experienced healing. Forgiveness didn’t erase the past, but it set her free from the pain of it. She also realised that forgiveness didn’t mean she had to continue in the same relationship with the person—it simply meant that she wasn’t going to let that betrayal hold her hostage any longer.

Jesus calls us to forgive because forgiveness is central to our walk with Him. He didn’t just forgive us for the small things. He forgave us for our sins, for the times we’ve rebelled, for the moments we’ve hurt Him and others. And because He forgave us, we are empowered to forgive others. When we hold on to unforgiveness, it doesn’t just affect the person we’re angry at—it hurts us, too. It keeps us from experiencing God’s peace and joy.

If you’re struggling to forgive someone, remember this: forgiveness is an act of obedience, not emotion. You may not feel like forgiving, but God commands it because it’s in your best interest. It doesn’t change what was done to you, but it does change what happens in your heart. When you forgive, you allow God’s love to flow freely in and through you. Forgiveness is freedom.

Confession:

I choose to forgive as God has forgiven me. I release all bitterness, anger, and resentment. I trust that God will heal my heart and bring peace to my soul. I choose freedom, and I declare that no one will hold me hostage with unforgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
