The Brook Has Dried Up

Verse:
“Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.”
— 1 Kings 17:7 (NIV)

There are times in life when things seem to be going well, and we feel secure in the path we’re walking. But then, without warning, circumstances change. We find ourselves facing a dry season—whether in our finances, relationships, health, or spiritual life. It can feel like the brook has dried up, and what once felt abundant and flowing has suddenly come to an end.

In 1 Kings 17, we read about the prophet Elijah, who had been sent by God to a brook called Cherith. God instructed Elijah to stay there, where he would drink from the brook, and ravens would bring him food. For a time, this arrangement worked perfectly. Elijah trusted God, and God provided. But after some time, the brook dried up. There was no more water, and Elijah’s immediate source of provision had come to an end.

This moment in Elijah’s life was a turning point. The drying up of the brook didn’t mean that God had abandoned him. In fact, it was part of God’s plan. The drying up was a signal that it was time for Elijah to move on to the next step in God’s plan. God had already prepared a widow in Zarephath to provide for Elijah, but Elijah had to trust God and take a step of faith.

When the brook dries up in our lives, it’s easy to feel lost, discouraged, or frustrated. We may wonder why things have changed or why things no longer feel as they once did. But it’s important to remember that God is still at work, even in the dry seasons. The drying up of the brook is not a sign of God’s abandonment; it’s a sign that He is moving us towards something new.

Take the example of Sarah, a woman who had worked in a well-paying job for years. However, after a series of changes at her company, she found herself unexpectedly laid off. At first, Sarah was devastated. She had relied on her job for stability and security, and now it felt like everything had fallen apart. But as Sarah took some time to reflect and pray, she realised that this “dry brook” was leading her in a new direction. She started a new business, one that she had always dreamed of but had never had the courage to pursue. Today, her business is thriving, and she is more fulfilled than ever.

In Sarah’s story, and in Elijah’s, the drying up of the brook wasn’t the end—it was the beginning of a new season, a new opportunity, and a new step in God’s plan. While the change may feel difficult or uncomfortable at first, we can trust that God knows what He is doing. He is always leading us to something better, even if we can’t see it at the moment.

Is there an area in your life where you feel like the brook has dried up? Take a moment to reflect on this season and ask God to help you see what He is leading you toward. Trust that, even in the dry seasons, He has a plan for your life, and He is guiding you to something new and better. Pray for the faith to step forward, even when it’s unclear what lies ahead

Confession:

I declare that even when the brook dries up in my life, I will trust in God’s plan for me. I know that He is always leading me to something better, and I will not be afraid to step out in faith. When one door closes, another opens, and I believe that God is guiding me to new opportunities, growth, and blessing. I will not allow fear or disappointment to hold me back, because I know that God is with me every step of the way.

The drying up of the brook does not mean that God had abandoned me. , it was part of God’s plan.

TRUST THAT, EVEN IN THE DRY SEASONS, HE ( GOD) HAS A PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE, AND HE IS GUIDING YOU TO SOMETHING NEW AND BETTER. PRAY FOR THE FAITH TO STEP FORWARD, EVEN WHEN IT’S ’s UNCLEAR WHAT LIES AHEAD.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCRIPTURE OUT OF MANY OTHERS IS JEREMAIAH 29 V 11.

IT IS THE PROMISE WORD OF GOD THA HIS PLAN FOR ME IS NOT OF EVIL BUT OF GOOD, NIT TO HURT ME, BUT TO GIVE ME A HOPE AND A FUTURE.

IN PSALMS SAYS HE HONOURS HIS WORD ABOVE HIS NAME AND THAT HIS WORD WILL NOT RETURN TO HIM EMPTY (VOID)

GOD SAID THAT HIS WORD WILL GO TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT HE HAS SENT IT TO DO. GOD IS NOT A MAN THAT HE SHOULD LIE. HE SAID, I BELIEVE IT, THAT SETTLES IT. SO NO MATTER HOW DRY ANY SITUATIONS ARE IN MY LIFE, I BELIEVE THE REPORT OF THE LORD.

WHEN HAGGI WAS SENT AWAY BY SARAH INTO THE DESERT, IT WAS DRY, SHE THOUGHT BOTH HER AND HER SON WERE GONERS, BUT GOD MADE THE DRY PLACE AT A TIME OF SORROW FOR HER A PLACE WHERE WATER WAS PROVIDED FOR HER..

MY GOD IS AN AWESOM GOD.

  19. Lessons from the drying of the Brook
    1. Don’t get distracted by what God has provided. God is your source not what you are enjoying.
    2. When an unexpected unpalatable situation happens, it doesn’t mean God has abandoned you.
    3. When an expected change happens, trust God that he knows what he is doing
    4. When something strange happens that you are not so comfortable about, seek God’s face because he might be guiding you to a new phase of your life.
When the brook dries up, you need not give room to fear to hold you back and finally trust God’s guidance.

  27. Although it may not be easy or a straight path, we are to trust the process when it comes to our journey with God. This devotional reminds me about Joseph who went from the Pitt’s to the Palace, but connected himself to the Owner of the process by wholeheartedly trusting God.

I trust that a lot was going through Elijah’s head at the time, but trusted in our all knowing God. It is for us to trust that, even in the dry seasons, He has a plan for our lives, and He is guiding us to something new and better. We must not forget to pray ahead to prepare us for the time ahead. Pray for the faith to step forward, even when it’s unclear what lies ahead.

  54. As a business man, i have experienced this feeling a lot. Before i was born again, it would cause me to be concerned and worry about what lays ahead. Through no fault of my own, i would lose a contract, or good worker or be owed large sums of money. Since i have been born again, and through the help of my amazing wife, i dont worry anymore.

We have still lost contracts and workers and clients have owed us amounts of money that would make you cry, but we have faith in God. Comfort in his word and promises over our life. We now know that as one door closes, another will open, an even better one than before. This has been our testimony.

The reason God closed the other door, may always remain a mystery, or it may be revealed months later, but it is always for a reason. God is always fighting our battles, Exodus 14:14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

Leave the battle for God and find your peace, He always knows best. The brook running dry is part of the story, but not the entire story, the best lays ahead. So take guidance from God and move onto the next chapter of your life.

I pray that God continues to fight for me, that no matter the challenges, my faith in Him remains unwavering, knowing that he loves me and will provide for me. Continue to close doora that you see fit Lord, and open whatever doors you feel i am worthy, thank you Father for your live and mercy over my life, in Jesus mighty name

Thank you Pastor, i pray that God continues to provide for you, lifting you higher and giving you visibility to touch more lives in Jesus name
