Living in the Freedom of Christ
Key Verse:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” — Galatians 5:1
Freedom is something we all desire. Whether it’s freedom from fear, guilt, sin, or the expectations of others, we want to live a life where we feel unchained and at peace. Galatians 5:1 reminds us that true freedom is found in Christ, who has already set us free. Yet, many Christians still live as though they’re bound by chains.
What does it mean to live in the freedom of Christ? It starts with understanding what Jesus did for us. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus broke the power of sin and death over our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin, shame, or fear. Instead, we are children of God, fully loved and accepted. This freedom doesn’t mean doing whatever we want; it means living in a way that reflects God’s love and purpose for us.
Take the Israelites as an example. When God delivered them from slavery in Egypt, He set them free physically, but their hearts and minds were still tied to their old life. They complained and longed for the familiarity of Egypt, even though they were no longer slaves (Exodus 16:3). Like the Israelites, we sometimes cling to the very things Christ has freed us from—past mistakes, toxic relationships, or the need to earn God’s love.
I know a woman who struggled with guilt over a mistake she made years ago. Even though she had asked for God’s forgiveness, she couldn’t forgive herself. She felt trapped, carrying a weight she didn’t need to bear. One day, during a sermon on God’s grace, she realised she had been holding onto chains that Jesus had already broken. She decided to let go of her guilt and embrace the freedom Christ had given her. From that day forward, she lived with a new sense of peace and purpose.
Living in freedom also means refusing to go back to old habits or ways of thinking. Galatians 5:1 warns us not to be burdened again by a “yoke of slavery.” This can be anything that pulls us away from the freedom we have in Christ—sin, fear, or even the pressure to follow man-made rules instead of living by faith.
For example, some people feel they have to “earn” God’s love by being perfect. But the truth is, God’s love isn’t based on what we do; it’s based on what Jesus has already done. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that we are saved by grace, not by works. When we try to earn God’s love, we place ourselves back under a yoke of slavery, forgetting that we’re already free.
To live in the freedom of Christ, we need to:
- Accept God’s grace: Believe that Jesus’ sacrifice was enough and that you are fully forgiven and loved.
- Let go of guilt and shame: Don’t let your past define you. Jesus has already set you free from it.
- Stand firm in your faith: When old temptations or doubts creep in, remind yourself of who you are in Christ.
- Walk in the Spirit: Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” The Holy Spirit helps us live in the freedom Christ gives.
Freedom in Christ isn’t just for us; it’s also for others. When we live in freedom, we become a light to those around us. We show them what it means to live with joy, peace, and purpose.

Christ has already paid the price for your freedom so don’t try to earn it again by what you do.
Just accept his grace, let go of guilt and shame, stand firm in faith because the devil will still try to guilt trip you and finally walk in the spirit so you don’t fulfill the desires of the flesh.

Thank you Pastor, thank you Minister of the week, increased grace and strength.
Thank you for this Pastor, a truly fantastic message.
Living in the freedom of Christ, what a privilege. The fact that Jesus surrendered His life to break the chains of sin, guilt, fear to name a few, i am truly grateful.
When we understand that we can not live a perfect life and ‘earn’ our salvation through works, but only through our faith and love in Christ, we are set free from all yokes of the flesh. The burden of trying to be perfect has now been passed onto Jesus, the ONLY ONE who can fulfill those works with perfection, we can take a deep breath and relax, for he will lighten our load. The scripture below sums it up best for me;
Matthew 11: 28-30
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light
The yoke of the flesh is hard and heavy laden, but to be yoked to our Lord and Saviour is EASY. When something is easy, anybody can do it…..we have an easy task to Love and follow Christ.
Thank you Jesus for taking my burdens and giving me the ‘easy’ route, i am truly grateful.
Thank you Pastor for this, i am renewed and ready for the day ahead…..an easy day with Christ by my side
