“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14
Light is powerful. It shines in darkness, gives direction, and brings hope. Jesus called us the “light of the world” in Matthew 5:14. That’s not just a compliment—it’s a responsibility. He has placed His light in us so that we can reflect His love and truth to others.
Think about how light works. A single candle can brighten a dark room, and a city on a hill can be seen from miles away. In the same way, when we live in a way that honors God, people notice. They see our actions, hear our words, and experience the love of Christ through us.
But what does it mean to live as the light? It starts with allowing Jesus, the true light (John 8:12), to shine through us. It’s not about being perfect, but about living authentically and sharing His love in practical ways.
In a world where people are quick to judge and criticise, you can shine by being kind and encouraging. At work, instead of joining in gossip, you can speak life. In your community, you can be the one who offers a helping hand or listens to someone who’s hurting.
Jesus also warns us not to hide our light. He says in Matthew 5:15, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” Hiding your light can happen when you’re afraid of standing out or being criticised for your faith. But remember, God didn’t give us His light to keep it to ourselves. He wants us to shine boldly, trusting Him to use us for His glory.
Living as the light of the world doesn’t mean you won’t face challenges. There will be times when you feel like your light is flickering, whether it’s due to discouragement, fear, or sin. But that’s when we need to go back to Jesus, the source of our light. Spend time in His Word, in prayer, and in fellowship with other believers. These are the things that fuel your light and keep it shining brightly.
Lastly, remember that your light isn’t just for you—it’s for others. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” When you live as the light, it points people to God, and He gets the glory.

Thank you for this Pastor, another excellent message. Having the light of Christ in us for all to see, living in a Christ like manner.
Your light must be shown through your actions and how you live your life, believing we have the light in us, without works is a dangerous mindset. Lucifer means ‘morning star or light bringing’, the original angel of light, before his own personal desires corrupted him forever. Lucifer was light, but that want enough for him. Matthew 5:16 that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Our good deeds must be seen.
Lucifer who was once the Angel of light, became the prince of darkness when he failed to control his own desires. This shows what can happen if we fall victim to our own wants.
When we understand that our good deeds make our light shine, we live like Christ John1:5 says ‘John 1:5
[5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcomeit. There is no room for darkness in our lives when we have the light, darkness vanishes instantly when light is there.
We pray that our family are constantly sources of light and keep our light burning by showing our deeds and living as Christ lived.
