Lazarus, Rise Up
Verse:
“When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’”
— John 11:43-44 (NIV)
The story of Lazarus is one of the most powerful examples of God’s ability to bring life to dead situations. Lazarus, a dear friend of Jesus, had been dead for four days when Jesus arrived in Bethany. To everyone around, it seemed hopeless. Martha even said, “But Lord, by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days” (John 11:39). Yet, Jesus proved that no situation is too far gone for Him. With just His words, Jesus brought Lazarus back to life, demonstrating His authority over death and the power of faith.
Many of us have “Lazarus” moments in our lives—times when we feel stuck in a situation that seems beyond repair. Perhaps it’s a broken relationship, a failed business, or a dream you’ve given up on. Like Lazarus in the tomb, these situations feel lifeless and wrapped in defeat. But just as Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave, He can call you out of whatever “dead” place you’re in today.
Take the example of Tom, a man who lost his job during the pandemic. For months, he felt defeated and hopeless, believing his career was over. He even stopped applying for jobs because he felt no one would hire him. But one day, during a sermon on Lazarus, Tom realised he had buried himself in despair. He prayed and asked God to help him rise out of his situation. With renewed faith, he began applying for roles again. Within weeks, he received a job offer that was better than what he had lost. Tom’s story reminds us that God specialises in resurrecting what we think is beyond saving.
Jesus didn’t just call Lazarus out of the tomb; He commanded others to take off his grave clothes. This shows that when God brings us out of our struggles, He removes the remnants of our pain and shame. He doesn’t just revive; He restores completely.
No matter how “dead” a situation may seem, it’s never beyond God’s power. Your “four days” of waiting might feel endless, but Jesus is always on time. Trust Him to speak life into what you’ve written off as hopeless.
