I Know Who I Am in Christ
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” – 1 Peter 2:9 KJV
One of the greatest revelations a believer can have is understanding their identity in Christ. Knowing who you are changes how you see yourself, how you respond to life’s challenges, and how you walk in victory. Your identity in Christ is not based on your past, your mistakes, or even your achievements. It is rooted in what God says about you through His Word.
The moment you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, you became a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are no longer defined by your old self or the labels the world tries to place on you. Instead, you are now a child of God (John 1:12), redeemed and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7), seated in heavenly places with Christ (Ephesians 2:6), and more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37).
Understanding your identity means rejecting the lies of the enemy. The devil’s strategy is to keep believers ignorant of who they are so they live defeated lives. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, Satan tried to question His identity by saying, “If you are the Son of God…” (Matthew 4:3). But Jesus stood firm, knowing exactly who He was and countering every temptation with the Word of God.
Your identity in Christ gives you authority. Jesus said, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19). This means you are equipped to overcome every trial, temptation, and attack of the enemy.
Knowing who you are in Christ also brings confidence and boldness. The righteous are as bold as a lion (Proverbs 28:1), and because you are the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21), you can approach every situation with the assurance that God is with you.
When you know who you are, you no longer live for yourself but for Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. You are His ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20), a light in the world (Matthew 5:14), and a co-heir with Christ (Romans 8:17).
