FREEDOM FROM THE PAST!
2nd Corinthians 5:17 –“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
The past is a powerful thing. It holds our memories, our mistakes, our regrets, and our wounds. For many, the weight of past experiences can feel like a constant burden, one that shapes the way we view ourselves and others. But as Christians, we are given a profound truth: in Christ, we are set free from the power of the past. The old has passed away, and the new has come. 2nd Corinthians 5:17 tells us that when we accept Christ, we become new creations. The person we once were, defined by our sins, failures, or the hurt inflicted upon us is no longer who we are. In Christ, the past no longer has the power to define us or dictate our future. We are made new, not by anything we’ve done, but by what Jesus has done for us on the cross.
This freedom is not just a theoretical idea; it is a reality that we are called to walk in. Romans 8:1 declares, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” The shame and guilt from past mistakes or wrongs committed against us have no hold on us. God does not condemn us. He offers forgiveness, healing, and the power to move forward.
Yet, while God offers us freedom, we are often tempted to cling to the past. Our memories, though painful, can feel like a part of our identity. We may find ourselves rehashing old wounds, allowing past hurts to influence our present actions, or allowing shame to keep us from fully stepping into God’s call for our lives. But the good news is that the freedom Christ offers is greater than anything from our past. Philippians 3:13-14 encourages us: “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
To live in freedom from the past, we must choose to press forward. It requires us to forgive, both ourselves and others and to leave behind the shame, guilt, and regrets. This does not mean forgetting the past, but it means no longer allowing it to control our actions, thoughts, and identity. The past is a part of our story, but it is no longer the defining part. Jesus calls us to walk in the freedom He has secured for us. John 8:36 tells us, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” The freedom we have in Christ is a complete freedom—freedom from the past, freedom from guilt, freedom from shame.
In Christ, we are no longer prisoners of the past. We are free to live in the present and trust in God’s future for us. His grace is sufficient, His forgiveness is complete, and His plans for us are filled with hope. We are invited to leave behind the chains of the past and walk confidently into the new life He has given us.

The past will never define my future in Jesus name. I am a new creation in Christ.

Good morning Pastor, thank you for this. What a powerful subject, being freed from our past. Leaving past pains and disappointments can be very challenging, they are inprinted on us. We may have failed on a contract before and we fear we may fail again, stopping us from pressing forward. It must stop.
Once we accept Christ into our lives, we are a NEW CREATION. Not a fixed creation or patched up creation we are new. That means we start afresh and every pain and disappointment is associated with the old us. Just as the devotion from the other day said, all our bursens can now be passed onto Christ because we are now in Him and He is in us.
The passages mentioned here are from the Apostle Paul, who before giving his life to Christ, was a persecutor of Christians. But Paul broke the shackles of the past and became a new creation, spreading the gospel and lifting up Christ until his execution. Paul turned his life around so much, that even the demons knew who he was. “Christ we know, Paul we know, who are you”.
This shows me that if we accept our new beiginning and new life in Christ, we too can be recognised and feared by principalities and powers. We too can walk in light and chase away darkness at will.
I pray that my past will not shape my future, that my new future in Christ will be my portion, that the old pains and disappointments died with the old me. That as i grow in Christ, my light will shine brighter and create a perfect future for myself and my family in Jesus name. Amen

Without Christ a bad past can dictate our identity, shaping our thoughts, relationships and future decisions. This is the very nature of spiritual enslavement where the past masters a person’s present and robs them of their future
