Don’t Be Hasty!
James 1:19 – “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s easy to act hastily, whether in our decisions, our words, or our emotions. The pressure of time, the stress of responsibilities, and the desire for immediate results often lead us to react quickly without fully considering the consequences. Yet, the Bible offers us a different way to live; one that values patience, discernment, and thoughtfulness. James 1:19 speaks directly to this issue: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
The call to “not be hasty” is not about avoiding action or being passive. Rather, it’s about living with intentionality and winning wisdom. We are called to listen first, to seek understanding before responding. This is particularly important in our relationships, where quick reactions can lead to misunderstandings, conflict, and regret. When we rush to speak or act, we often act out of emotion, fear, or frustration; none of which are the foundation for wise, godly decisions. Proverbs 19:2 says, “Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way?” When we are hasty, we miss opportunities for clarity and guidance from God.
There is also a spiritual principle here. God is rarely in a rush. His timing is perfect, and He often works in ways that require us to wait, to be still, and to trust Him. Psalm 27:14 encourages us to “wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Waiting doesn’t mean passivity; it means trusting God’s process. When we take time to seek His guidance through prayer and reflection, we align ourselves with His will rather than rushing into decisions that we may later regret. Jesus Himself exemplified patience and thoughtfulness in His ministry. When people came to Him with urgent matters, He did not respond hastily or out of pressure. He took the time to listen, to understand the heart of the situation, and to respond with wisdom and compassion. Jesus modelled for us the importance of being deliberate in our actions and words. He knew that rushing would not bring about lasting change—only thoughtful, prayerful responses could do that.
So, when faced with decisions, frustrations, or moments of conflict, let us take a step back. Before we speak or act, let us pause and ask ourselves, “What is God leading me to do? What does His Word say about this situation?” Let’s cultivate a spirit of patience, remembering that not every moment demands an immediate response. Instead of being hasty, let us be slow to anger and quick to listen, trusting that God will direct our steps.
Today, reflect on areas of your life where you tend to be hasty. Is there a decision you’re making without fully considering all the factors? Are you reacting out of emotion rather than waiting for God’s peace? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you slow down, to listen, and to act with wisdom and grace.
